How is breast augmentation performed?

February 27, 2024

Augmentation mammoplasty is a surgical procedure performed to improve the size and shape of the breasts. During the surgery, different techniques are used, being the incision and placement of the implant key aspects.

The incision can be made in the areola, breast crease or armpit, depending on the patient's and surgeon's preference. Following the incision, a pocket is created for the implant, which can be located behind the pectoralis muscle or directly behind the breast tissue. The choice of location will depend on factors such as the type of implant and the patient's anatomy.

Once the implants are positioned, the incisions are closed with sutures. The length of the procedure varies, but generally ranges from one to two hours. Recovery involves postoperative care and the use of compression garments to facilitate healing and reduce swelling.
