Gynecomastia

Male breast

Gynecomastia is an increase in the size of the breast in the male, produced by a proliferation of mammary glandular tissue. Its cause is an imbalance between the stimulatory effects of estrogen and the inhibitory effects of androgens on breast tissue.

Gynecomastia before
Gynecomastia after

True gynecomastia usually appears as a lump or an increase in breast volume, which may be unilateral (affects only one breast) or bilateral (in both), and may be accompanied by breast tenderness or pain.

The pseudoginecomastia is the increase in size of the breast that is produced by the deposit of fatty tissue, without proliferation of glandular tissue. It is common in obese males.

The treatment consists in the removal of the gland through a small cut in the areola when it is a true gynecomastia (with mammary gland) or to eliminate the fat with liposculpture. Normally a combination of both techniques is performed.
